9 best handheld vacuums for every type of job in 2024

If you’re a die-hard upright vacuum fan who doesn’t need all the bells and whistles, the Dyson Ball Animal 3 Extra is for you- if you’re willing to endure an arm workout carrying this thing around. It uses the same overall design as the Dyson V15 Detect; its horizontal orientation makes it easy to empty, but it isn't the largest dustbin on the market. If you want a Dyson stick vacuum with a larger dustbin and don't mind using something bigger and more unwieldy, the Dyson Outsize is a solid alternative. Dyson doesn’t list the dustbin capacity of the V11 Animal cordless vacuum, but I would guess it’s in the range of about half a gallon.

The V11 delivers excellent performance on bare floors and does a very good job on carpets. It comes with a bigger variety of tools and brushes, and its dirt compartment can hold more debris. On the other hand, the Omni-glide is much lighter and recharges more quickly, although its performance on bare floors is mediocre. The Dyson V11 is a little more versatile than the Dyson Outsize. The V11 is easier to maintain and maneuver, slightly more portable, and delivers superior performance on low-pile carpet.

Dustbuster QuickClean Handheld Vacuum

It's powerful enough to suck up most kinds of large and heavy debris without too much effort. The manufacturer advertises the suction motor as offering 185AW of suction power, which is a little ways off from the newer Dyson V15 Detect, which produces a maximum of 230AW of power. The V15 also has a fluffy brushroll that generates a tighter seal against flat surfaces. This vacuum can clear away the majority of large debris like sand and medium-sized material like rice within a single pass, though a few pulverized chunks of larger material might be left behind.

Black+Decker Dustbuster Handheld Vacuum

After emptying the bin, I closed the dustbin door, slid the wand back into place, and continued vacuuming. It took less than 30 seconds from start to finish, so emptying the dustbin won’t slow you down. The vacuum also worked well for pet hair removal on hardwood and tile floors, and the brush roller was gentle and did not leave any scratches on the hardwood. The thing that amazed me the most was how clean the roller brush was after sucking up all that pet hair. In the past, I’ve used scissors to snip away tightly tangled pet hair from a vacuum roller brush.

This handheld vacuum is a must for pet owners, especially if you have a cat or dog that sheds a lot. The vacuum’s main attribute is how well it tackles stuck-on pet hair, which is sometimes tough to get out of furniture and upholstery. The item comes with upholstery and crevice tools to get rid of debris and hair from small spaces and a motorized brush tool, which removes particles that cling to fabric surfaces.

Even as the most expensive vacuum on this list, we didn’t list it as the premium option because it doesn’t work well on high-pile carpets, which is a huge bummer considering the price. Regardless of these cons, this is a great option for people with allergies to pet dander. The Dyson V11 is a better vacuum than the Dyson Omni-glide.

Cory Fernandez is a commerce editor at NBC Select, where he covers food, cleaning, wellness and lifestyle content. “With a width of just 12.5mm and 254mm reach, it is engineered to reach and clean deep into narrow gaps,” reads the press release. Instead, use the Scratch-free Dusting Brush attachment on your laptop’s keyboard to suck up crumbs or even on your TV screen to remove unwanted dust and fingerprints. The tool is sold as part of the Pet Grooming Kit, that also comes with extension hose and quick-release adapter. The bristles are fine metal ones, which straighten when pushed through your pet’s fur, penetrating deep without causing pain.

Best Lower Mid-Range Vacuum For Pet Hair

I found the smaller bristles moved through his fur more easily than the regular cat brush, and Behemoth didn’t seem to mind being Pet Grooming Kited with the Dyson Pet Grooming Kit. Although predominantly designed for dogs, the Dyson Pet Grooming Kit will work with long-haired cats. I tested my sample out on my cat Behemoth, who’s a Maine Coon cross (rescue). He has exceptionally long fur, which will get matted if he’s not regularly brushed. Still, vacuuming isn’t just about keeping your floors shiny and clean. Pets carry dander, dirt, bacteria, viruses, and insects everywhere they travel.

Overall, if a small vacuum is what you need and nothing more, this is a good option. The Dyson V11 does a terrible job of scrubbing away stains on bare floors when used with its primary floorhead, though that isn't very surprising given the fact that it lacks any mopping capability. There are three variants of the Dyson V11, though they're very similar and differ only slightly in terms of included attachments.

Like many bagless vacuums, the Dyson V11 incurs virtually no recurring costs. The filter is also expected to last the lifetime of your product as long as it's cleaned regularly. If any parts break or need replacement, you can purchase them directly on Dyson's website; you can find a replacement here. 3Quantity and size of dust displayed on screen varies depending on usage. Examples shown may occur within one or more displayed size range. That’s why Dyson is here to clean up, yet again, with three new innovations.

Pricier variants of the Samsung also come with two batteries, giving it a longer overall runtime. It's heavier than the older Dyson V8 but compensates with better performance across most surfaces, a longer battery life, and an automatic power adjustment feature. However, it lags behind newer, pricier Dyson models like the Dyson V15 Detect or Dyson Gen5detect regarding raw suction power.

The Dyson cordless vacuum did a great job of sucking up dust, dirt, and pet hair from carpeting and rugs. I spread fine pet hair over an area rug that’s difficult to clean, and I swept it in with a broom to ensure the hairs would stick to the fibers. Then, I tried out the V11 to see if it would remove the hair. It did—it took about three back-and-forth passes over the rug to remove most of the hair. Using the mini-roller attachment, I could also vacuum pet hair off throw pillows and upholstery. I tried it on curtains, but even on the gentlest mode (Eco), the suction was too powerful for the curtains.

Like the Dyson V15 Detect, using it in its 'Auto' power model allows it to adjust its power level automatically to match the surface you're cleaning. There are also manually selectable 'Eco' and 'Boost' modes for conserving power when dealing with lightweight debris or stubborn messes, respectively. You can also adjust the main vacuum head's suction to accommodate different surface types, but you have to do it manually via a small slider on the head. Unlike the Wyze Cordless Vacuum, its main floorhead doesn't have a headlight to help you see in darker areas.

The vacuum offers powerful suction, adjustable cleaning modes, and high-end filtration that traps even tiny particles. The V11 is excellent at cleaning various flooring, from hardwood and tile to carpet. However, keep in mind that the convenient—for immediate on/off control—hair trigger can inadvertently start the vacuum when lifting it, causing minor inconvenience.

Unfortunately, Dyson no longer makes these models new, so you have to buy them used. When used with its turbo brush attachment, the Dyson V11 does a good job of handling pet hair on upholstered surfaces. It clears long strands of hair without too much difficulty but leaves some shorter strands on the very edges of the path of its tool.

Dust really does live everywhere, and the same goes for crumbs that slip into tight spaces and piles of pet hair that cover not only surfaces but some that builds up on your furry friend. He’s not a massive fan of the sound of a vacuum cleaner, so he wouldn’t let me brush him while it was turned on permanently. That’s not an issue, as the vacuum cleaner can be used in short bursts after hair has been collected.
